Bowhunter & Hunter Safety Courses

Hunter Safety - September 7th & September 14th 2022


The Sportsmen’s Club of Clifton Park offers Hunter Safety and Bowhunter Safety Courses, to meet the required certification for New York State licensing. Classes are usually held twice a year and are open to all.

New York has an extremely safety–conscious generation of hunters, thanks largely to over 60 years of Sportsman Education and the dedicated efforts of thousands of volunteer Instructors. Hunting remains safer than ever, but we cannot become complacent, as every hunting–related shooting incident is preventable.

Course Topics Covered

  • Firearm and crossbow handling and safety techniques
  • History of firearms
  • Knowledge of firearms and ammunition
  • Proper gun handling and storage
  • Marksmanship fundamentals
  • Specific laws and regulations
  • Principles of wildlife management and wildlife identification
  • Outdoor Safety
  • Hunter ethics
  • Hunter responsibility toward wildlife, the environment, landowners and the general public

Age Restrictions/Requirements:

  • Students must be 11 years or older to take this course (Note: In New York State the minimum age to hunt is 12-years old).
  • Students 11 to 16-years old must have a signed permission slip (PDF, 106 KB) from a parent or legal guardian to allow for the handling and shooting of a firearm during this course.

Pre-course Homework Requirement:

  • All students must bring the completed homework worksheet, provided by the DEC at time of registration, in order to take the class.R REGISTRATIO
